INDIA MOBILE CONGRESS’ 2023 (27th October 2023 – Day 1) Conference Report
India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2023, the largest technological festival with telecom, media, and IoT forum in India and Asia, is being held from 27th to 29th October 2023. It is organized by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).
The theme of IMC 2023, is ‘Global Digital Innovation, an opportunity for telecom operators/ infrastructure providers, seminconductor, device, drones, 5G equipment designing and manufacturing companies, system integrators and start-ups to display their innovative products and solutions. The goal of IMC is to inspire innovation across various socio-economic sectors like healthcare, energy, agriculture, education, transportation, defence, disaster management, connecting unconnected through N-GSO satellites and more. This event propels India to the forefront of 5G technology implementation.
IMC 2023 is stages India’s largest tech exposition, conference, and demonstrations, boasting intellectual contributions from Industry leaders worldwide. The global tech fest aims to highlight the latest and greatest innovations in the realm of digital technology. Recognizing telecom as a foundation for digital growth of India, the key stakeholders of the industry gathered together at IMC 2023 to promote additional 5G applications, such as drones, enhancing 5G networks, and contributing to the creation of novel public application.
Inaugurated by Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the event brought together players across the ICT industry to debate, discuss, disseminate, and demonstrate the endless potential of 5G. The event focused on not only ideating on how to democratize 5G in India but also on how to make India a technology champion, fostering international and regional cooperation, inspiring inclusive & sustainable development, promoting entrepreneurship and innovation, driving foreign and local investments, amongst others. IMC 2023 highlights cutting-edge technologies like 5G and 6G, as well as delve into the world of Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and robotics, among others. Furthermore, the forum explored challenges and concerns within the tech industry, the promising prospects of green technology, and the ever-pressing issue of cybersecurity.
Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Friday 27th October 2023 inaugurated the 7th India Mobile Congress at Pragati Maidan in Delhi. The inauguration session was also attended by Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology and Railways, Government of India, Shri Devusinh Chauhan, Hon’ble Minister of State for Communications, Shri Neeraj Mittal, Secretary, Department of Telecommunications, along with other government officials. Mr. Akash M. Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio, Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group, also address the inaugural session. .
A 2-minute video showcasing India’s innovation capabilities along with the fastest 5G roll-out in the world, the impact of digitalization on the citizen-centric services, including digital payment, and deployment of indigenous 5G stack, was played during the inaugural. Hon’ble Prime Minister also launched 100 5G test labs across various educational institutions in India.
This year’s IMC inauguration attracted over 7600 attendees, apart from Media and other representatives. 3600 students from the NCR region participated in the event. The event had 247 companies, 419 startups, and 1267 foreign delegates across 48 countries. On the first day, after the inaugural session, 46000 visitors experienced the future of technology at the exhibition.

The inauguration session was followed by panel sessions on Day 1 with key personalities from the Government of India, telecom operators in India and telecom infrastructure providers and enablers across the globe. The session began with opening remarks from KG Purushothaman mentioning the post-2022 jump in large language models (LLM) and how more and more companies and CEOs are using these services for improving their current workflow.

This followed with remarks from Anku Jain mentioning the three levels of generative AI and the need to introduce efficiency and the current model created by Mediatek.

Azhar Sayeed remarked that Generative AI is making a more refreshing infrastructure and a lot of models are open sourced. There is need for better training data to improve these AI models.

Kishore Annapureddy mentioned that Generative AI has its own risks and it is not completely reliable. The real expertise to mold it resides with humans at this point of time.

This followed with the panelists discussing that there is a need for AI to be democratized by reducing the exceptionally high compute cost and LLMs can be expanded into different languages and different services.

Abhay Savargaonkar remarked that just like a man is known by the company he keeps, Generative AI depends on the type of dataset it is exposed to. Hence, Generative AI needs to go through as much variety of datasets as possible. Organisations also need to invest sufficiently in employee training initiatives to ensure that the future corporate world is equipped to manage AI efficiently.”

This has been reaching out to companies for upskilling, re- skilling and internship. Several courses are credited, converted into the certification that will allow the skilling to integrate at each level. They are pushing entrepreneurial mindset by hosting smart India hackathon.

In India, there are approximately 850 million broadband subscribers however most of them are in urban areas and accessibility varies from state to state. Rajeev Saraf from Lepton Software stated his views that 76% of all mobile phones are smart but only 50% people are unique users, showing people have access but missing out on affordability

Vishakha Saigal from Reliance Jio pointed out that their company has created the necessary infrastructure and incurred capital expenditure, however she expressed that safeguarding current investment via stable policy and ease of doing business is needed. Additionally, she expressed the need to acknowledge strain on television network by OTT providers and develop a framework to check contribution of OTT providers.

Saurabh Arora from Qualcomm highlighted that they are the front runners of innovation and support innovation for masses. However, he emphasized on the point that 91% of smartphone shipments are very costly and Qualcomm has made efforts to reduce that. As more customers shift to 5G, cost of smartphones will reduce over time.

Sachin Arora, from Giesecke & Devrient highlighted that the ROI is the biggest problem for companies to the network operators. Further, he mentioned that it is the question for use case not the affordability in the initial stages.

Major credit was given to the fact that the infrastructure of manufacturing units has grown massively and government policies such as PLI and PMA has assisted the companies to utilize the full potential of this growth.

Mr. Ravi Bhatkal stated that he’d like India to reach $1 Trillion in manufacturing of electronic goods in the next 10 years.

Mr. Gagan Bansal stated that while the aim of the country to reach $300 bn is certainly possible, the market is even bigger, and our domestic producers have the capability of achieving that.
